Hard Water & Health
Water hardness is caused by inorganic minerals that find their way into the water supply, organic minerals come from eating our fruit, nuts, vegetables etc. Healthy plants extract much needed inorganic minerals from healthy soil, sand, rocks and water. The plants convert inorganic minerals into organic minerals through the process of photosynthesis, once these minerals are photosynthesized they become healthy for humans. Certainly very small amounts of "hardness" in the water isn't going to be as harmful as mega doses. Unfortunately in some areas of Alberta water hardness should be a great concern within entire townships, everyone including restaurants are serving up mega doses of inorganic minerals in their water, tea, coffee, juices that is made from unpurified water. Maybe you've heard the urban myth that says "I get my minerals from the water" like many urban myths this one is rooted in both denial and ignorance, like the other urban myth, "don't think about it, it will go away". No, we don't get micro-mineral nutrition from hard drinking hard water, anymore than sucking on a piece of granite is good for your health. Yes a person is getting their "minerals" all right, but even when taking mineral supplements there is a vast difference between taking magnesium oxide or magnesium citrate.
Research at The Center for Mineral Metabolism and Clinical Research at the University of Texas, Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas National Institute for Health has produced some critically important information. Magnesium oxide supplements that JS Lindberg, MM Zobitz, JR Poindexter, and CY Pak tested were virtually insoluble in water, with only 43% solubility in simulated peak acid secretion. In the study they reproduced the digestive acids of the human body as closely as possible, and tested several forms of mineral supplements, the results were astounding. Even in water the magnesium citrate was highly soluble, a whopping 55%! When tested at peak acid secretion magnesium citrate was 65% soluble. So it is certainly no urban legend that some supplements go down the toilet without providing much benefit for the body. Mineral supplement bioavailability is the key to good health, minerals found in hard water clearly do not provide benefits for the human body, they are detrimental.
According to Dr. Charles Mayo of the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota water hardness "...is the underlying cause of many, if not all, of the diseases resulting from poisons in the intestinal tract. These pass from the intestinal walls and get into the lymphatic system, which delivers all of its products to the blood, which in turn, distributes to all parts of the body. This is the cause of much human disease. Water hardness is inorganic minerals in solution. When these minerals enter the intestines by drinking hard water, there is an immediate reaction between them and the fats, oil and fatty acids present, causing a precipitation of inorganic calcium and magnesium, iron and so on, to form new, insoluble compounds."
According to Dr. Robert W. Flinchbaught, "Pure Water is Life". Dr. Flinchbaught states that; "The evidence that distilled water and reverse osmosis water acts as a solvent within the body, dissolving the inorganic mineral deposits, is very important. A growing body of evidence suggests that distilled water and reverse osmosis water dissolves and removes these disease - causing minerals and flushes out the hundreds of dangerous chemicals that have been taken into the body as well. Distilled and R.O. water is not only free from pollutants, but it apparently helps remove them as well from the cells of the body, thus purifying the body so that it can function as it should.
